Volunteers and Job Training

Job Skills Training
Soft Skills 'Makin' It Work' Program

Soft skills are the non-technical skills, abilities and traits that workers need to get a job, stay employed and advance with positive and proactive work habits.

Without the cognitive, social and even emotional abilities needed to thrive and advance in an employment environment the possibility of failure is high. ReNew addresses this problem by offering a classroom-based ‘soft-skills’ job readiness program.

Learning to Work It Out
Workplace Soft Skills for Individuals with Significant Barriers

“Learning to Work It Out" is a 10-lesson soft skills program designed to help individuals with multiple barriers to employment gain confidence, people skills, and insights needed to transition into the world of work.
The “Learning to Work It Out” curriculum challenges self defeating thinking that keeps these struggling individuals from fully engaging in the job search process, then deliberately teaches the interpersonal skills needed to manage difficult work-related social situations. Specifically, this program uses cognitive behavioral techniques to help hard-to-serve workers develop:

(1) Insight into self-defeating personal beliefs which drive unproductive behaviors,
(2) Awareness of employers’ unspoken expectations,
(3) Skills for managing strong emotions,
(4) Skills for dealing with difficult social interactions, and
(5) Skills for logically solving problems without relying on assumptions.

Beginning to Work It Out
Preparing At-Risk Youth for Workplace Success

“Beginning to Work It Out" is a 10-lesson soft skills program designed to help at-risk youth and young adults develop the people skills and personal insights needed to transition from adolescence to a life of work.
While at-risk youth and young adults may rebel against arbitrary rules, they often respond
well to genuine relationships with caring, knowledgeable adults. When delivered by
instructors with an understanding of cognitive change and a knack for building rapport
with troubled teens, the “Beginning to Work It Out” curriculum has been highly successful
in helping youth develop:

(1) Insight into the personal beliefs which drive counterproductive behaviors,
(2) Awareness of employers’ unspoken expectations,
(3) Skills for managing strong emotions,
(4) Skills for dealing with difficult social interactions, and
(5) Skills for logically solving problems without relying on assumptions.

Makin’ It Work
Transitioning from Corrections to the World of Work

“Makin' It Work" is a 10-lesson training program designed to help offenders in transition from corrections to the community adjust more successfully to the world of work.

Meta-analyses of correctional interventions clearly indicate that the most successful means
of rehabilitating offenders is a cognitive-behavioral approach. CB interventions challenge
offenders to change their beliefs as well as their behaviors by taking a hard, clear look at
the impact these elements have had upon their lives. The “Makin’ It Work” curriculum
uses elements of both cognitive restructuring and cognitive skills instruction to help ex offenders
develop:

(1) New insight into the thinking traps which justify their illegal actions,
(2) Awareness of the hidden code of conduct most employers’ hold,
(3) Self-control skills for managing emotions,
(4) Critical thinking skills for solving problems; and
(5) Interpersonal skills for dealing with difficult confrontations.

Workin’ It Out
Soft Skills Training for New Workers in Today’s Workforce

“Workin' It Out" is a 10-lesson classroom-based soft skills training program designed to help inexperienced workers adjust to the unfamiliar expectations of the workplace.

Our goal with job-seekers like these is not simply to find them jobs, but to help them stay
on those jobs long enough to advance to a living wage and discover the value of work.
The “Workin’ It Out” curriculum helps new employees find success in the first 3-6
months of work, when turnover is often highest, by offering them the insights and skills
needed to adjust to the social environment of work. Specifically, WIO uses cognitive
behavioral instructional techniques to help customers develop:

(1) Insight into personal beliefs which drive behaviors in their social lives,
(2) Awareness of employers’ unspoken expectations,
(3) Self-control skills for managing strong emotions,
(4) Communication skills for dealing with difficult social interactions, and
(5) Problem solving skills for logically resolving interpersonal workplace iss
